Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, and nanocontainer-based smart self-healing coatings for offshore and industrial infrastructure.
Corrosion Protection in Extreme Marine Environments
Corrosion degradation inflicts a catastrophic multi-billion-dollar toll on global industrial and offshore infrastructure. Traditional barrier coatings (such as standard epoxies) inevitably suffer from micro-cracking and mechanical scratching during operational lifetimes, permitting rapid chloride ion diffusion and catastrophic localized galvanic attack.
Our research at PCSIR and UET Lahore addresses this vulnerability by developing active, autonomous self-healing nanocontainer-doped smart coatings.
Nanocontainer Synthesis & Triggered Release
We encapsulated eco-friendly green corrosion inhibitors within mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks (ZIF-8) and layered double hydroxides (LDHs):
- pH-Responsive Triggering: Localized corrosion causes cathodic alkalinity (pH > 9) or anodic acidity (pH < 4). The coordination bonds in our ZIF-8 nanocontainers break selectively under these pH shifts, releasing active inhibitors strictly when and where damage occurs.
- Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS): After 30 days of continuous immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl electrolyte, the low-frequency impedance modulus (|Z| at 0.01 Hz) of the self-healing coatings remained above 10^9 Ohm·cm², indicating complete passivating film restoration across deliberately scribed artificial defects.
- Potentiodynamic Polarization: Corrosion current density (Icorr) dropped by more than two orders of magnitude compared to uninhibited epoxy counterparts.
Industrial Applications
By pairing advanced characterization with physical kinetics modeling, we can design proactive coatings for subsea pipelines, chemical processing vessels, and marine mining equipment, substantially extending maintenance intervals and safeguarding infrastructure.
