Metallurgical failure analysis consulting
Metallurgical failure analysis finds out why a metal part cracked, corroded, wore out or deformed, and what to change so it does not happen again. Abdul Rahman runs failure investigations remotely for companies in the United States, combining fractography, SEM/EDS, metallography, hardness testing and chemical analysis into one root-cause report.
What's included
- Review of the part's history, drawings, material specification and service conditions
- Visual and fractographic examination of fracture surfaces
- SEM/EDS analysis of fracture surfaces, deposits and inclusions
- Metallography, hardness and microstructure checks against the specified material and heat treatment
- Root-cause finding with corrective actions for design, material, processing or operation
Who it's for
- Shaft, gear, fastener and weld failures
- Cracking after heat treatment or welding
- Unexpected corrosion or wear in service
- Supplier disputes that need an independent view
How it works
- Discovery call: A free 30-minute video call to understand the part, the material and what you need to decide.
- Proposal: A short written scope with the analyses, the data or samples needed, the timeline and the price.
- Analysis: Data and images are shared securely online; physical testing is arranged with a lab near you when needed.
- Report and debrief: A written report with findings and recommendations, followed by a call to walk your team through it.
Questions about failure analysis
What is metallurgical failure analysis?
Metallurgical failure analysis is the investigation of why a metal component failed. It examines the fracture surface, microstructure, chemistry and service history to identify the root cause, such as fatigue, overload, corrosion, hydrogen embrittlement or a heat-treatment defect, and recommends how to prevent it.
Can failure analysis be done remotely?
Yes. Much of the work is interpreting images and data: photographs, SEM images, EDS spectra, hardness results and specifications. When new tests are needed, they can be run at an accredited lab near you, and Abdul Rahman directs the testing and interprets the results.
How long does a failure analysis take?
A straightforward investigation using existing data usually takes one to two weeks. Cases that need new lab testing take longer, depending on the lab's turnaround. The proposal states the timeline before work starts.
